Despite the lack of a freshman to lead the Marseille attack, André Villas-Boas is absolutely not counting on Kostas Mitroglou this season.
Kostas Mitroglou was hired as OM’s new flagship striker in 2017 and remains one of the biggest flops of the McCourt era. The 32-year-old, who bought € 15m, never won in Marseille and did not do better at Galatasaray and then at PSV Eindhoven, where he was loaned out last year. Back at OM this summer, the Greek international was quickly warned by André Villas-Boas that he would have to find another club during the transfer window: “I’m not counting on him. We’re looking for a way out. He’s got a contract so we can’t kick him out and I’m not counting on him. But today Mitroglou is still with OM. What is a change in strategy by AVB?
It’s over for Mitroglou
This would be won for the former Benfica striker who was only signed in June 2021. According to information from Provence, André Villas-Boas would camp in his positions and rule out Mitroglou’s return to the first team of OM despite the lack of an understudy for Dario Benedetto. According to the regional daily newspaper, there is an equal chance of seeing Kostas Mitroglou wearing the OM jersey as “seeing the old port blocked”. While some positively assessed his presence with other professional players in training, this return OM would only serve to avoid violating the Football Charter and its Article 507. It is therefore beautiful. and well done for Mitroglou.
