At the end of the contract in a year, Florian Thauvin has not yet extended his lease, and time is running out. From January 1st, the world champion can negotiate with the club of his choice to leave for the next season. But should OM keep it?
This is probably the next big file Pablo Longoria has to manage. Indeed, the Spanish front-runners are expected after achieving a satisfactory transfer window around the world, given OM’s finances, for the players whose contract ends next June. And if there are many in this situation, it is obviously the case of Florian Thauvin who draws the attention. And with good reason, given the player’s market value, it would be a huge shortcoming for the Marseille club if the world champion stayed free. However, the threat persists, as explained in the columns by L’Equipe. “If I consider a free start? Of course. I have no choice but to think about it,” admitted Florian Thauvin. So should OM do everything to keep it?
The Thauvin Puzzle
The question has the merit of being asked, as OM Pablo Longoria’s finances leave no room for maneuver in the discussions. And Florian Thauvin has no reason to like Steve Mandanda and Dimitri Payet, who have agreed to cut their salaries in order to extend them. And for good reason, the world champion is not in the same situation at all, as he remains bankable at the age of 27 and can hope for a nice challenge abroad, especially in Spain or Italy, where several clubs covet him. And if an extension becomes difficult, what should OM prefer? A sale this winter to reclaim a transfer allowance while saving the last six months of his salary or to promote the sporting aspect by keeping him until the end of his contract, even if it means leaving for € 0. The course in the Champions League will probably be important in this case, as Florian Thauvin will be important for the second part of the season if OM qualifies for the knockout round, otherwise the question of an exit this winter will likely arise. Even so, Pablo Longoria will try to keep it. “We spoke to Thauvin and that is normal. In the coming days we will see if we can find an agreement to continue our relationship between the club and this important player, ”confides the OM football director to RMC Sport.
